A good mentor can make the difference between a career that begins with structure and develops into a meaningful and satisfying one or a career that begins in chaos and ends in burnout. Mentorship is much more than "hand holding;" and shadowing; it is essential to the development of professionalism and one's identity as a doctor and team member. In this presentation we will discuss what good mentors do and do not do; how to ensure that early career veterinarians especially receive necessary mentorship and consider how mentorship looks across the career lifespan. We also will look at those qualities that hospital leadership should identify when selecting mentors and optimal and suboptimal mentor-mentee pairings.
