Diseases and disorders of the equine lower airway account for a substantial number of cases of poor performance in the equine athlete. More than just issues of performance, some of these disorders are responsible for poor quality of life in many individuals and ultimately result in euthanasia for some. The most common and problematic disorders of the lower airway are Exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH), Inflammatory Airway Disease (IAD) and Recurrent Airway Obstruction (RAO). This presentation will update the practitioner on current treatment recommendations as well as management strategies and environmental control recommendations. The differences in the diagnosis and thus treatment of IAD and RAO will be discussed. Additionally, the presentation will focus on areas where future treatments may aim.
