Burnout is rampant among all health care professionals and especially among veterinarians. If not addressed, burnout is a major risk factor for poor career longevity. Because of this, burnout is not only a professional/personal issue; it is an economic one as well. Often times, the victims of burnout are blamed for their failings and left to feel that burnout is THEIR problem. In this presentation, we will look at what burnout is, how it differs from compassion fatigue, ways to avoid and work through burnout, and how hospital leadership can provide cultures that support clinicians beyond "pizza, bagels and yoga."
