Walter E. Cook is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Veterinary Pathobiology and adjunct in Rangeland, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management, and has been with Texas A&M University since March 2014. He earned a BS from Cal Poly, a DVM at the University of California, Davis, a PhD in Wildlife Epizootiology at the University of Wyoming, and is board certified with the American College of Veterinary Preventative Medicine. Prior to coming to Texas, Dr. Cook served as a wildife veterinarian for the Wyoming Game and Fish Department and as Assistant State Veterinarian and State Veterinarian for the state of Wyoming. Dr. Cook has worked extensively with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and Texas Animal Health Commission (serving on four of their advisory committees). He worked with these agencies to bring Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) ante-mortem testing to use on Texas deer. He has also trained hundreds of veterinarians in these sampling techniques. Dr. Cook is active in the US Army Reserves having achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colnel. Currently he and his team are conducting research on an oral vaccine against anthrax for use in wildlife, and are studying respiratory diseases of exotic and bighorn sheep. They are also investigating combinations for chemical immobilization and offer capture, relocation and CWD testing services.
